The color fade from light to dark was created using one slice of walnut with both dark wood from the center of the tree, and lighter sapwood found close to the bark. This piece was ripped, resawn and joined back together in a way that mimics the pages of a book bending open. A gold inlay adds a playful detail to a knot in the corner.
